Paint and the Environment

“Everywhere, the glaringly unsustainable nature of our society and the injustices of late twentieth-century materialism have been met by an intelligent response from people who see the need for the obvious alternative: to bring consumption under control, to end waste, to ensure the survival of our planet’s diverse life forms, and to protect the rights of future generation”.

There is a groundswell of mainstream public concern about climate change and the environment.

Alarmingly some studies have linked the chemicals found in conventional paint to be harmful to unborn babies research by Dr. Judy Ford. Health problems can arise from even short-term exposure to conventional paints including eye and respiratory tract infection, headaches, and dizziness.  As public concern about health and safety of paint, and environmental impact focus grows, the trend toward green building has taken on new significance.

1950, virtually all architectural coatings oil-based paints. By 1975 – just 25 years later, and before any regulation of paint – almost 75 percent of architectural coatings had been converted to water-based (latex) versions. Today, that’s up to 85-90 percent.

In answer to these problems, Kelly-Moore Paint USA is the first company created the Green Building Guide for architects and designers who are developing projects with a green focus. Buildings that are designed to be eco-efficient and sustainable are not merely element of our future.

Because the Environment, Kelly-Moore Paint Vietnam always wants to introduce to Vietnam market a new painting and decorating business specializing in the use of non toxic, eco friendly paint.  After much research of the painting industry here in Vietnam in the last two years. We have learned that there are paints which are used to paint the homes, workplaces and buildings will cause very harmfull to our health. The majority of paints in the Vietnam market, those which contain toxic paints and very high Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) such as oil paint, PU paint and NC paint. Most paint manufacturers including the very popular brands here in Vietnam continue to produce oil-based and conventional paints.

There is No Law - No Regulation – No Institute brings up & takes care of these issues. That is very harmful for our country, our communities, because VOC's are actually a class of carbon based chemicals that have the capacity to rapidly evaporate. Once airborne, many VOC's have the ability to combine with each other, or with other molecules in the air to create new chemical compounds. Some are of natural origin and are relatively benign.
